This John Heaps is a stumbling block !
I know he existed and that is about all. He is noted as the father of the groom on the marriage certificate of his son, Robert Heaps in 1838.
He was married to Jane ....?.... She is listed on census records in later years as living with her son Robert Heaps & family. She appears in the 1841 census living with her 2 daughters, Mary aged 20, and Lucy aged 15 in Mason Street Preston. This Mary could be a daughter, or her daughter-in-law. Not too sure about this. The reason I am wavering is that I can find no record of Jane's son Robert in the 1841 census living with a wife Mary. I can only find one Robert, who appears to be at The Elephant in Adlington - a Pub. He is listed as a Calico Bleacher. Is this our Robert, off working and lodging, or out for a night at the pub, while his wife stays at home with his Mother Jane ? No way to find out ! How frustrating. In the 1851 census, she is living with son Robert, still in Mason Street Preston, but there is no trace of her on the 1861 census. I presume she died between 1851 & 1861. Presumptions again !
There are a few records on the IGI of a John Heaps married to Jane (Jinny) Woods. Dare I presume once more ? No. I have no way of checking this until I make my next trip to Preston (in a few months) and start searching Parish records myself. (Update - the Lancashire Online parish Clerks has added so many Parish records, and are adding more daily. It won't be long and I'm sure I'll be able to trace this long lost GGGG grandad of mine.)
Back to John Heaps. What exactly DO I know about him ?
-
He married Jane ..?..
-
He had at least 3 children - Jane - b.1816, Robert - b.1818, Mary - b.1821- unsure, may be his DIL, Lucy - b.1826
-
He was listed as a labourer on his son Robert's marriage certificate
-
He died before 1841 - Jane, his wife, was alone with the 2 younger daughters at the time of the 1841 census, and there is no trace of John anywhere else in the census records.
